Autonomy

The Improviser

Your strongest doorway out of script is spontaneity: you exit by choosing. Where the script offers its pre-decided response, you've developed the pause: the reflex apology caught mid-flight, the assigned role declined, the routine broken on purpose just to prove it's optional. This is Berne's freedom in its most practical form. Not doing whatever you like, but having the full keyboard available and pressing the key you elect. The watch-out is choice as performance: perpetually surprising, never pinned down, response always fresh, and nobody, including you, ever quite sure where you stand. Freedom that never commits to anything is the script wearing improvisation as a costume.

Try this once

This week, use the pause in the service of the other two capacities: once to simply perceive before responding (awareness), and once to choose the most honest available answer rather than the most nimble one (intimacy). The keyboard is yours. Play the notes that cost something.

Where this comes from

The Improviser is one of 3 patterns in Autonomy, a Transactional Analysis assessment on EgoProfile. Your natural doorway out of script: awareness, spontaneity, or intimacy.

The patterns it's defined against

An archetype only means something next to the others it could have been. These are the rest of the set.

Which one is you?

Reading a pattern is not the same as recognising your own. The egogram takes three minutes, needs no account, and is where every one of these comes from.
