Autonomy

The Witness

Your strongest doorway out of script is awareness: you exit by seeing. Where others are swept into the reaction, the game, or the commentary, your first move is to step back and perceive: the feeling named before it acts, the game's opening spotted as an opening, the present moment reclaimed from the rehearsal. This is the foundational capacity. Berne built the other two on it, because you cannot choose what you cannot see and you cannot meet someone from inside a fog. The watch-out is the observer's trap: seeing can become its own hiding place. A life fully witnessed and rarely entered is the script's most sophisticated compromise. It will happily grant you the balcony seat as long as you never come down to the stage.

Try this once

This week, convert one act of seeing into one act of doing. When you notice the feeling, say it to the person it concerns. When you spot the game, cross it out loud. The noticing is complete. Berne's next two capacities, choice and contact, are where your practice goes next.

Where this comes from

The Witness is one of 3 patterns in Autonomy, a Transactional Analysis assessment on EgoProfile. Your natural doorway out of script: awareness, spontaneity, or intimacy.

The patterns it's defined against

An archetype only means something next to the others it could have been. These are the rest of the set.

Which one is you?

Reading a pattern is not the same as recognising your own. The egogram takes three minutes, needs no account, and is where every one of these comes from.
